The Da Vinci Code ~A stepping stone to a life of more faith or maybe the start of a journey

Assalam alaikum & Peace to all...

Ok, I had to start this topic...but firstly I'll just say that I have not read the novel or seen the
movie (as of yet - debating if I should) But I do have my opinions on it!

So, basically the novel (in a nut shell) is about the life of Jesus and how it comes to live
in our modern times and about how the church as a whole has covered up and pushed
reality aside. Hmm...well have to agree with the fact that the church as a whole is
famous for 'hiding' important details that people should know about.

Now about the whole 'real' life line of Jesus...I just don't buy it...and why should I?
What was Jesus' message? Why was he put on earth? These are the more important
questions. If we start to get lost into the whole question of what kind of life he had
led we lose the essence of his message and just think how horrible that would be!
Whether looking as a Muslim or Christian (Catholics/Orthodox included - don't get
me started on that topic!) Jesus is revered and held in high regard (as it should be)
Do we really need to know if he had been married, had children, etc? No, I don't
think that is important at all. In Islam Jesus has no 'divine' status...he was a man
and above all was a prophet of God, we are not told in the Quran how Jesus lived...
basically we are told of his message and that he is the son of Mary (both of whom are
very highly regarded in Islam ) I think we need to stay away from the 'real' life
of Jesus and focus on the message that he has left us...

I really believe that people in general are looking for an outlet to release some of
their feelings about religion...maybe these movies (Da Vinci Code & Passion of the Christ)
are leaving the door open (and blogs) for discussion...and perhaps it is a way of
learning what each of us thinks about religion in general...even better maybe it will
peek the curiosity of some people to start and practice religion...and when people start
to look and analyze more...they will come to learn the truth more...
So, as for what the truth is....well...for me personally it lies with this statement
"I bear witness that there is no god but God and Muhammed is his servant and Messenger"

All about Islam ...all of Islam is based on faith in the Unity of God.
When one declares this statement, one testifies to the Unity of Allah, and to the
message of the Prophet hood.

When one bears witness that Muhammad is His messenger, one is confirming that all of the
prophets before him were also His messengers - Allah is One and His message is one.
A person becomes a Muslim when he or she declares this statement with purity of heart
and conviction of faith.

Acknowledgement of all prophets before in that one simple statement... God is
one and His message is one...this is what e should be focusing on...
not whether Jesus had a wife or not!

Comments or views please...I think its an important topic...

salam sis... im currently reading the book at the moment, what is currently annoying me is the fact that many 'religious' people are going to watch the film and leaving in disgust... ermm.. hello, didnt u read the book? didnt you see the trailer? or are u just going to watch it for the pure sake of it?? Any film i listen to reviews or read the book before.. what is wrong with these ppl?? ppl draw pics of Muhammed (saws) are disgusted by the way 'muslims' react (im not agreeing with the reaction) then a fictional film/book is produced and ppl are calling hunger strikes and having protests. Ermm... hello??! Sorry.. i just got into work ;p Fi amenallah

Your right...why would 'religious' people go and watch? Im
sure they have all heard about it.
I think the movie is just big hype as usual...I think that people
have a right to be offended by it...I mean if there was that big
deal with the cartoons made then this is no different ~ a certain
religion is being mocked, which is not fair, the only difference
with this is that this is 'hollywood' and one writer perspective...its still the same ~ lets focus on what is important!

Assalamu Alaikum..
Aalya I completly agree with your post.. Everyone needs to look at (and try to follow) his (Jesus) real message that he was sent to give!! Does it really matter if he was married?? And if history is correct the lady Mary that he was "married" to was a former prostitute (Allahu Alim May I be forgiven for any wrong info).
I did read the book.. And it is a murder mystery type book not a religous one. The whole of it is not based on Jesus' life. His life is incorporated into the book. So unless if you like to read a murder mystery then dont bother yourself with it. I will have to admit though it seem to give a few wonderful scientific facts in the book.
I personally enjoyed the book.

OK, a few things. I am currently reading the book... just started today. My husband and I are eager to see the movie, but I wanted to read the book first.
To the girl whos aid that the woman he was supposedly married to was a former prostitute. Actually, Mary magdalene was most likely NOT a prostitue. It is a theory among some Christians that she was, but there is absolutley no proof of it. The story of the Prostitute in the Bible does not say who the woman was, and many just assumeit was her, although it is never said that. It is said that Mary Magdalene was a friend of Jesus (pbuh) and it never says she was a prostitute. There is also no other historical in any other documents that state this. Also, although it may not be important to how we live our deen, is it not plausable that he may have had a wife? I do not have the specific reference at the moment (I can get it if you need me to) but either in Qur'an or Ahadith it states that when Jesus comes back, after he defeats the antichrist, he will marry and have children while he lives out his remaining days on the earth. If he is to marry in the future, and obviously it is important to know this fact or it wouldn't be stated anywhere, then why is it so difficult to believe he may have been marrie dbefore, and that gaining this knowledge may be important. I'll tell you one reason it's impirtant... IF (and tha is a big "if") it is true, and can be proven true, the entire Christian religion will crumble. I was a Christian for the majority of my life, and I know how the faith works, and I know what it is like to believe that Jesus is the Son of God (astighfirallah) because I used to believe it. If it was proven that Jesus was married, that faith would be shattered. Now that I have given my two cents, I will get back to my book, Insha'Allah. Hope this info has helped.

Also, you said that this is hollywood and one writer's perspective, when in fact, much of the book is based on historical truths. Yes, the story in and of itself is fiction, the plot is fiction, the characters are fiction, but historical FACTS are all over the book. Historical facts that give light to why Christianity as we know it today is a mockery. Have you read the book "Jesus Prophet of Islam" by Muhammad'Ata Ur Rahim? It talks about the history of The Church. A lot of the facts stated in this book are also stated in The Da Vinci Code. Such as what happened at the Council of Nicea, where the four Gospels were chosen. This is why it is so controversial... not just because The Church considers it blasphemy, but also because The Church does not want this stuff exposed.
p.s. sorry for all my typos in this post and the last one.

Thank you for your comments everyone... I had forgotten about the part of
Jesus coming back and living out his normal life...when you had
mentioned this it got me to thinking that perhaps he had not had
a 'normal' life and this would be a second chance so that may mean
that he did not have a wife or children.
Yes, the novel does have many historical facts...but what people
have difficulty is with the 'fictional' portion of it. The danger
they fear is that people will take the fiction and think that it
is historical fact.

I did read the book and went last saturday to watch the movie.. after 20m I felt asleep and decided to leave the cinema.. I think that the book is a great one and, yes, I got confused about many things regarding my religion (the first vote on option 4 is mine), but about the movie I have a different opinion..
I suggest to those who didn't read the book to go and watch it, but for the one who read the book first, you will get a bit disappointed...

Althought the novel should be consider just for what it is, i.e. a novel, I am sure that there is something true in it, some secrets that the Papacy has always tried to hide to the population.. Otherwise how can you explain all the boycott that it has been done before the issue of the film??

Aalya said...

Well the papacy is famous for hiding things... thats for sure!
A long time ago the who priesthood and papacy were the ones who
controlled everything...they would tell the people what they could
and could not do...including reading...think about it if you have
a nation of people who are illiterate they will never question
your authority or what you preach! Think about it...why is it
that in Christianity it is so wrong to ask a question or to
question your faith...you are told right away to 'just believe'
...this is why I like Islam you are allowed to ask questions
in fact it is encouraged! The first revelation to the Prophet
was 'Read in the name of your Lord Who created. ch96 v1'
I have always gotten an answer for any question I have
posed in Islam...I may not agree with it or accept it but
that is only because of my level of understanding and knowledge.
So I kind of urge Christians everywhere to
'ASK QUESTIONS...AND DON'T STOP TILL YOU GET A GOOD
ANSWER FOR IT...!!!' The one good thing about Da vinci code is
that it is bringing these questions to light!

You are right, just being in the shadow and believe in what they say just because they told you this is not correct..
I am still sure that the DA VINCI CODE has something true in its novel..

Aalya said...

Wonder if we will ever find out the truth ??

Anonymous said...

I guess it would have been something not good for the Papacy, loosing all the power and authority that they actually have on the faithful...

Aalya said...

They have not lost anything it seems ...they are holding on
very carefully but I think with how technology and information
is so readily available now that they are fighting a losing battle
!

Salam allaykom.
I would just like to say that I liked the movie because I got the feeling that any christian that sees it will start to question their faith and how things can easily become currupt. It will urge then to search the truth. I thought it was an intresting twist. Everyone should really take in account, though.. that it is just a movie. Not real. Most art forms like this are made to make people question things and learn a moral..or just to give a different outlook, nothing more.
good night !!!

I agree that the movie and book will make Christians
question their faith...which can be a good thing
sometimes!
