The secret...is not a secret

Assalam alaikum & Peace to all

Ok so last night in sheer boredom we watched 'The Secret'. It is a movie/documentary, whatever you want to call it about the 'secret' to life, basically it will tell you the way to achieve all that you want in life. This being money, health, happiness, cars, houses, etc. Whatever your 'little heart desires' I watched about half an hour and fell asleep. The idea behind the secret is (yes, I am going to tell you) that you must believe good things about you so that you will create good things in your life. You need to not focus on the bad instead it should be on the good things in life and that will generate more good things...and so on and so on... Well, that got me to thinking that I am really thankful for everything in my life and I try to look at the good things in life. This whole idea of focusing on the good will accomplish all you want in life is for me personally is a bunch of wild oats...sow them at will! All through the movie, well the half hour that I did watch, I couldn't help but think where in all of this is God? Hmm... I'd like to ask that question of the people who participated in the movie. I would like to rather put all my faith and trust in God and then perhaps after that I can focus on the 'good' and pray to God that I am given the good things in life. I am not under the delusion that I can direct my life, ok yes, in a small way you can (free-will comes into play here) but if there is something good to come in my life that will only come from God! I think the idea is good that it wants people to focus on good things and not negative, but they are sadly wrong about where that good should come from!
I can only pray that we are all given the strength and patience to find the good and to always go toward the straight path - Inshallah!

I saw part of "The Secret" awhile ago and was not impressed - i forget exactly what part it was, but there was something i sooo wanted to blog-rant about, however I think I was busy at that time and never got around to it... I think it was something about the purpose of life... May Allah guide them to the truth insha'Allah.

The Secret is the latest and by far the worst example of a HIGHLY profitable trend where self-help gurus with fabricated new age titles and little relevant education, credentials or legitimate expertise brainwash us into believing that they know what is best for us, our marriages and our families.

Often their only contribution to society is introducing some exotic sounding, new age philosophy. However, they often cleverly form an incestuous group of like-minded “experts” who cross-promote each other by swearing their success is due to following the beliefs of another member of their “cult!” All the while, they ply the airwaves jockeying for an ever-larger audience by appearing in the national media to garner third-party endorsements.

The Self-Help Movement has become the Self-Destruct Movement by diminishing or destroying our critical thinking skills to choose and evolve on our own. We have given up the freedom to build healthy lives, marriages and families based on our unique history and life experience. Instead many victims, blinded to the value of their own life experiences, are attracted to the latest secret in self-help, in an attempt to find out what they should think, feel and how they should act... this is the definition of a cult.

The solution is a return to our (common) senses! The best way out of this learned “self-helplessness” is to go cold turkey. Stop following ALL self-help gurus now. Begin, instead, to reclaim your natural, God-given ability to think for yourself. The common sense that was once readily available to all of us is still there free of charge and waiting to be applied to just about any challenge we might face in life… all you have to do is use it.

Please, let's all work together to stop the flock of "sheepeople" who blindly move from one UNPROVEN concept to the next, looking for the answers to life's challenges that you already possess and that is the OBVIOUS!

I think that in general these types of things (self-help) are used mostly by people who are not especially strong believers in God. The ones who are probably look to a more religious answer to their problems. It really is discouraging in life without believing in God. I have started to find God in my life recently after a long time of strong belief that no such thing existed. And when you feel like that, you look for anything that could help. And I think that looking at the good in life is a nice idea and when you're a positive person, you do tend to feel better. From personal experience, seeing the positive makes the negative not stand out much. It resurfaces, always, and you yourself cannot make it go away, but when you act positive even if you don't fully feel it, you do end up feeling what you're acting with a bit of time... My experience.
