Ramadan Diary - Day 1

(not the actual food I made but close to it!)

Assalam alaikum & Peace to all

Well so here it is Ramadan 2008 has started! I pray that all of our fasts are
accepted and that we will have the strength to continue with
these thirty days!
So, how was my first day? Well I can tell you that it was very difficult
and I had a massive headache right before breaking fast and for most
of the night afterwards.
Hubby and I had gone out earlier in the afternoon to a park to just walk
around and relax, we ended up being there for over two hours.
Got back home and I started to cook - yeah big surprise!
I made a veggie-bean soup, some small pastry type thing filled with
potatoes and cheese and the final piece was a whole roast chicken.
I also cut up some fruit for a fruit salad that we ate late in the night.
At around 7:15 I was really starting to 'suffer' with the headache but
I managed to finish the first Juz of the Quran -mashallah - every time
I started to read it my headache would feel a bit better.
Finally the time came to break our fast - which we did with dates and water.
I then served out the soup and we enjoyed the time together.
However after I ate the soup my stomach complained severely,
somehow the food was not sitting well with me and made it turn over
and over again, but thank God all the food stayed where it was
supposed to! So then after eating the soup we prayed Maghrib, which
was nice and continued to eat the rest of our dinner.
After eating for a bit we sat down and watched a bit of TV and before
we noticed it was time for Isha prayer, so we did that as well.
Before we knew it the time was already past 10:00 and we were feeling very
sleepy and tired. So I prepared our place setting for Sahur and went to sleep.
We woke up and had a light meal, of the pastry filled with potatoes and cheese,
boiled eggs, tomatoes, cucumbers and some more fruit and of course
lots of water!
So that takes me until today (day 2) I will Inshallah post how today goes!!

Ps. I had a comment from Houda that she was looking for a
Ramadan Timetable for Jacksonville, FL -
well I found this link - Inshallah it helps!

So was it different this year? actually... werent u married for ramadhan last year too? yeh, scrap that last comment :) insha'allah the rest of the month goes as smoothly. Caffeine headaches??? :P

Yeah I was married but it was still nice :)

I don't think its only from the caffeine, the breaking of the fast falls so late this year almost 8:00pm its just a bit long - especially now that I am working and then driving! Inshallah I will get used to it and it will become easier! Although the reason for all this is to know what it feels like when you have no food - so I'm not complaining that I get to break my fast at the end of the day - because so many cannot

Assalaamu alaikum

Insha'Allah you're into the swing of fasting now and finding it easier and no headaches! Alhamdu Lillah Saudi is good - maghrib is 6:10 here! I find fasting until 8pm a bit much too. Ramadam Kareem. :]

What are those yummy looking sausage rolls type things? Please tell me how you made them as I love finger foods!

Still having trouble; this new style comment box won't allow me to comment with my wordpress ID! Grr!

wa alaikum assalam - I made Turkish style 'borek' and I filled them with potato and cheese! I had lots of leftover mashed potato which I mixed in some feta cheese and added a bit of yogurt to loosen it up and wrapped it up in egg-roll wrappers (I couldn't be bothered with using 'real' pastry or making it!) and then baked them in the oven! They turned out really well! The following week I made a feta cheese and sundried tomato version which was quite good too!! I'm always looking for interesting fillings!
Thanks for stopping by!

Not sure why the comment thing won't work?

Assalaamu alaikum

Oooh, yummy! What is the pastry you are supposed to use? Is it just a Turkish version of spring roll/filo pastry? I love the version they use in Algeria; it's called dyoul and it stays crunchy even after the borek have cooled down whereas spring roll pastry goes a bit soft and chewy.

As for the comment thing - when I put my url in, it tells me there are illegal characters in the url. I even tried commenting with my blogger url and it told me the same thing. Really weird.

wa alaikum assalam

Usually they use a special dough in Turkey its a bit thicker than the phyillo dough that people usually use (but you can use it just layer a few more of the thin sheets) Yeah with the phyillo it stays crunchy, the egg-roll ones do go a bit soft after a few days (but oh well hubby still likes them ...lol)

I changed the comment settings so maybe it works better now?
